LINCOLN, Neb. (KMTV) — A Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) inmate assaulted two staff members just before 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The assault happened inside a housing unit where the inmate punched the first staff member in the head and caused him to fall unresponsive to the ground.

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) says the inmate continued his assault, eventually taking the staff member's canister of oleoresin capsicum (OC) and spraying him while he was laying on the ground.

Inmates alerted another staff member of the situation. That staff member was attacked by the same inmate when he arrived on scene.

NDCS says the second staff member was hit in the head numerous times with the OC canister; however, he eventually managed to deploy his own OC canister towards the inmate and called for assistance.

More staff members arrived and restrained the inmate.

The first injured staff member remains hospitalized while the second received staples to close injuries to his head and was released from the hospital.

The incident is under investigation.
