It's been nearly eight years since John Atkinson of Omaha died of lung cancer. Saturday, a fundraiser in his name went big - providing opportunity to those who have lost so much.
The John Atkinson Lung Cancer Foundation hosted its 8th annual "Rock to Raise Fundraiser" Saturday at the Saint Nicholas Community Center.
The nonprofit event provides scholarships for high school students who've lost a parent to lung cancer. To date, 80 kids have gotten scholarships totaling more than $100,000 dollars.
"It brings them together with a group of kids that have experienced the same that they have," said Lori Atkinson, The John Atkinson Lung Cancer Foundation, "And in some ways, I think that helps them get past their hurt and helps them in their healing process to know that they are not alone in all of this."
John Atkinson holds a very special place to everyone here at Action 3 News. He was one of our news photographers for many years.
