(KMTV) — The Sarpy County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Unit helped save a trapped kayaker on the Platte River Tuesday afternoon.

A 73-year-old man was one of four kayakers exiting the river.

As Vern Pensas was getting out of his kayak, it began to float away in the strong current.

He held onto the rear of his kayak floating down the river about a half mile east of the Highway 50/Highway 31 boat ramp.

He was able to grab onto a tree limb, but needed assistance.

A sheriff's office rescue boat located him and brought him to safety.

He was not hurt.
