Fifth-graders at a Papillion-LaVista school are studying current events like globalization and North Korea by writing essays.
"I think people would be surprised to know, but even though we're young, we need to know what's going on," student Landen Pennewell said.
The lessons at La Vista West Elementary are part of a the class that is taught by 2017 Rookie of the Year Tony Gentille. Students watch CNN videos recapping issues and explaining different sides and context, helping students shape their arguments as they write.
