Local House reps give thoughts on impeachment

OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — Democrats in the House of Representatives announced two articles of impeachment against President Trump on Tuesday.

The president is charged with abuse of power and obstruction of congress, as a result of the congressional investigation of the president's dealing with Ukraine.

The House Democrats say the president abused his power by pressuring the Ukrainian leader to investigate Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. They say the president withheld foreign aid and a White House meeting, until Ukraine agreed to publicly announce an investigation into Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.

Democrats say Pres. Trump obstructed the investigation by not allowing White House officials to testify before Congress.

Congressman Don Bacon (R), who represents the Omaha area says he doesn't see an impeachable offense, but "I don't think what the president did was wise," says Bacon.

Bacon says nothing the president did was illegal and those that did testify before the House Intelligence Committee simply assumed there was a 'quid pro quo,' without proof.

The Congresswoman across the river hasn't ruled out impeachment. Rep. Cindy Axne (D) of Iowa says she needs to look closely at the articles before reaching a decision, but says it seems the president abused his power.

"The president did request foreign assistance from another country for his political gain to basically, investigate a political opponent," says Axne.

Some House Democrats have floated simply censuring President Trump, instead of impeachment. Rep. Bacon wouldn't commit either way.

"I would have to read the censure," says Bacon.

A vote on impeachment in the House of Representatives is likely coming next week.
