The Henry Doorly Zoo's newest elephant left the Toledo Zoo today, bound for Omaha.

Louie, a 14-year-old captive-born African bull elephant, is traveling on the back of a semi-truck in a specially made crate. The 6,500 pound elephant will join a herd of six other African elephants already wandering nearly five acres as part of the African Grasslands exhibit at the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.

The timing of Louie's arrival is very intentional as Henry Doorly officials are hoping he will be able to adjust to his new home and herd in time to mate with the zoo's female African elephants in August.
