A male elephant died at the Henry Doorly Zoo at around 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

The elephant, Warren, was estimated to be 8 or 9 years old.

According to a release, Warren was anesthetized to have a mold made of a cracked tusk in order to have a prosthetic covering sculpted to prevent further cracking. About 20 minutes into the procedure, Warren's respiration stopped and efforts to save him were unsuccessful.

Warren, one of two male elephants at the Henry Doorly Zoo, came to Omaha from Swaziland in March 2016.
