A major Omaha employer may create about 100 new jobs on the city’s northside.
Mayor Jean Stothert referenced the possible initiative at a campaign event Wednesday.
"We are working with one of the city's biggest employers," Stothert said. “It’s going to create over 100 new jobs and when I am able to announce it - and hopefully it will be in the next 30 days - you will be thrilled."
The mayor’s office said Thursday no further deals could be released because they were in the middle of negotiations.
The announcement has members of the community talking. Ria Gold works at the popcorn shop, It’s Poppin, at Fair Deal on 24th Street. She says she wants more creative jobs.
"It's really hard to find jobs in this area because there aren't any,” Gold said. "I love that we have these locally owned businesses, especially black-owned businesses, really close in my neighborhood, but I would like to see more creatives around here."
Todd and Diamond Johnson said they’d like to see the employer appeal to young people.
"Internships, something that would allow the you to come to a situation and learn different things that would prepare them for a career later on down the line," Todd Johnson said.
All three agree, as the area becomes economically vibrant, the affect is noticeably positive.
"I think it's thriving a lot more,” Gold said. “There are people out now, and there's not so much violence."
As for what’s next, Stothert says she hopes to announce it soon.
"I'm talking about good paying jobs,” she said.
