Sen. Anna Wishart of Lincoln proposes a constitutional amendment to allow voters to decide whether or not medical cannabis should be legalized for medical purposes.

Supporters said at the hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee on Thursday it could help Nebraskans suffering from chronic conditions.

However opponents argued this is a gateway to legalizing recreational marijuana use.

This bill requires the support of 30 senators compared to 25 however if passed, Gov. Ricketts cannot veto this resolution.
