It’s an idea in the unicameral that won't go away. On Wednesday, Nebraska state lawmakers are gearing up to tackle a controversial bill. Medical marijuana.

Supporters say it could help people with debilitating diseases, but a lot of law enforcement officials and some senators aren't on board with this proposal.

For years, former state senator Tommy Garrett fought this battle. Now, state senator Anna Wishart carries this baton.

On Wednesday afternoon, lawmakers will look at LB 622 or the ‘medical cannabis act’.

The proposal is clear, it's not for recreational purposes so smoking is not approved for prescription.

Instead, cannabis can come in the form of a pill, liquid, or oil. It can be used for several conditions like glaucoma, chronic pain and cancer to list a few.

Some families who support this measure say It's the breakthrough they need.

But earlier this year, Nebraska governor Pete Ricketts said in a statement quote: "Legalization of marijuana for any purpose has proven to be a risky proposition because the controls placed on its use in other states have fallen short."

At 1:30 p.m., lawmakers in Lincoln will hold a bill hearing.
