Nebraska schools could face high costs after cyberattack

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A cyberattack on a suburban Omaha school district touched off an FBI investigation and is proving to be a significant, and perhaps costly, inconvenience.

Officials told the Omaha World-Herald Papillion-La Vista Community Schools’ system rebuilt its serves after the May cyberattack. The district replaced some desktop computers and wiped hard drives. The operating systems on some teacher laptops will be replaced.

The district has cyberattack insurance, but it will probably still bear the burden of some recovery costs. That sum hasn’t been determined yet.

Information technology director Lucas Bingham says the cyberattack was introduced to the system via email. He says the attack had signs of ransom attempt— fouling the system and then demanding money to restore it.

Bingham says the attacker has not been identified.
