A fallen sheriff's deputy from Adams County, Colorado will be laid to rest on Friday and Nebraskan police officers will be there to pay their respects.
A man wanted for assault shot and killed 31-year-old Adams County Deputy Heath Gumm last week.
On Thursday, several officers from the Omaha area, including four from the Omaha Police Department, two from Lincoln Police Department and two from Sarpy County Sheriff's Office traveled to Adams County, just north of Denver to honor Deputy Gumm's life.
From OPD, Officers Davidson, Clements, Jacobs and Dawson, who are on Omaha's Police Honor Guard were asked to serve as the casket guard at Thursday's vigil.
"Colorado is having a very tough year so far and it's even more heart wrenching for us this time knowing that just a few weeks ago, they went through the same thing. And now they have to do it again so it's even more important for us to come together as a blue family to support Deputy Gumm and his family and his agency and we're proud to do this," said Officer Jordan Jacobs who's been on the Omaha Police Honor Guard for three years.
OPD's Officer Gregory O'Neil runs the Omaha Police Honor Guard. He says he's proud to send four officers knowing they're representing Nebraska, especially when Colorado officers came when Omaha needed support.
"I'm very proud. When these officers come back, they're going to have to catch up with their own work from the specific units from where they work, and they're taking time away from their families to travel out there for two days and that doesn't even phase them," said O'Neil. "They want to be out there and honor and represent the law enforcement family out there."
