New 'flashing lights' at Papillion crosswalk

A crosswalk in downtown Papillion just went high-tech. The city installed flashing lights into the streets to help alert drivers that someone is crossing the street.

“I have never seen one of these before,” said bicyclist Harry Baulish, he uses his bikes as his main transportation.

“They are doing things to make walking and biking safer here in Papillion,” he said.

The idea of the lights is to hit the button, the lights will start flashing alerting drivers to stop for people crossing the street.

“Anything that will give us audio or visual alert to a safety zone is wonderful,” said Baulish.

While Baulish tried to cross the street he had a dozen cars speed by without stopping, the lights are harder to see during the day but the city said they hope they help early morning and late evenings.

“In a downtown congested area, this is a wonderful idea with a word of caution, you are still responsible for your own safety,” added Baulish, “It is another tool I have in my arsenal that I have to make my crossing safer.”
