Tens of millions of people have begun their journeys to their Thanksgiving destination; it's one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. Before you stuff your bellies troopers want you to do something that will get you to thanksgiving dinner safe and sound.
The increased number of people traveling across the country means more potential for deadly crashes. It's estimated 48 million people will travel by vehicle this weekend.
The Nebraska State Patrol wants you to be smart and not drive while distracted. They say plan your trip and anything you need ahead of time and put down the cell phone when behind the wheel.
In 2017 the Nebraska Department of Transportation estimates there were almost 4,700 distracted driving crashes; 19 of them were fatal.
"Your decisions and your choices affect more than just you so if you make a bad decision by texting and driving, or driving distracted, or speeding, or using drugs or alcohol those choices could be catastrophic not just for you but the other people around you. The other people that you love or people that you've never even met," said NSP Trooper Keith Bell.
NSP wants people to be safe and decrease distractions for everyone.
