OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) - Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert has signed a second emergency order to reinstate a curfew on Friday and Saturday night only.

The curfew was recommended by Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer and will be in effect from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. both June 5 and June 6.

Officials say they're aware of five events planned for Friday and a large gathering with 4,000 expected on Saturday. Police say information they have indicates a "strong possibility" of civil unrest, violence, destruction of property and the potential for criminal behavior Friday night through Sunday morning.

"This is unfortunate but necessary," said Stothert. "We will continue to encourage and support peaceful protests, but we must also take proactive steps to reduce risks to everyone; the participants, the public and first responders."

A previous curfew expired on Wednesday morning in the aftermath of large protests in the city over the death of George Floyd in Minnesota.
