According to the Omaha World-Herald, Mayor Jean Stothert and her challenger Heath Mello spent a combined $3.8 million on their respective campaigns, making the 2017 mayoral race the most expensive in Omaha history.

Outside groups also contributed $750,000 to influence the race, with some organizations spending more than $100,000.

Stothert defeated Mello by about 6,000 votes.

Prior to 2017, the record was $3.5 million, which came in 2001 when Mike Fahey narrowly defeated Hal Daub.

More recently, Stothert and Jim Suttle combined to spend $2.7 million in 2013.
