Omaha Police address crime spike

Posted

The City of Omaha has seen a recent spike in violent crime and police are now taking steps to combat it.

While Omaha Police maintain crime is down for the year, officials say they have seen a trend over the last month that has the Gang Unit, Uniform Patrol, Homicide Unit and federal partners following up on leads.

OPD is increasing resources and approving overtime for extra patrols in area where they're seeing the most troubling trends.

According to Captain Ken Kanger says the primary focus right now is on reports of shots fired, but with a murder and other shootings over the weekend, getting guns out of the hands of criminals is another goal.

"Information on weapons is always important," Kanger said.
