Thursday’s heat index won’t stop hundreds of kids heading to Miller Park to hang with the city’s finest and bravest.
The annual event Fun in the Park returns and is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m.
Crime Prevention Specialist Theola Cooper at Omaha police estimates about 400 to 600 children turnout for the summer event.
This year, children can expect free food, swimming and free golf lessons at the nearby Steven Hogan Golf Course.
Also, the police department and partnered organizations will host a bicycle helmet giveaway and bike raffle.
OPD’s mounted patrol and helicopter ABLE-1 are scheduled to appear while the fire department will have its smoke trailer out for demonstrations.
Cooper says the police department believes policing goes hand-in-hand with community engagement.
“It’s very important for community engagement to start young with our kids so that they know not to be afraid of the uniform with the police department but if they are ever in any situation of danger they know to talk to police officer,” she told 3 News Now.
