An Omaha South will be able to go to college next year for free thanks to a surprise announcement.
The College of Saint Mary awarded Alicia Hogan, a Marie Curie scholar, with a scholarship check for $80,000 Thursday. Her academic and leadership lead to this award.
Hogan says she's glad her years of hard work paid off.
"I've been working so hard in high school to get good grades and get good test scores," she said, "I think it's paid off so far and I'm really excited for the next journey."
Hogan plans to major in biology in the fall and hopes to pursue a career in forensic science or in medicine. She would not have been able to afford college without the scholarship.
