OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — We are now just six days away from thanksgiving — and one of the area's best-known businesses is talking turkey.
Omaha Steaks is turning to some star power to help you get ready for the holiday. 3 News Now reporter Danielle Davis spoke with the Food Network's chef David Rose, who is also a celebrity chef spokesperson for Omaha Steaks.
According to Chef Rose, to get that perfect looking turkey, it starts before you even put it in the oven. Defrosting is key. The average amount of time to properly defrost a turkey is three days - you need about 24 hours per five pounds of turkey. The perfect and most popular turkey size is 10 to 15 pounds and you definitely want to brine your turkey.
"A pro tip, if you want to get that extra crispy skin on the turkey, put it on a roasting rack, leave it uncovered in the fridge for an additional 24 hours. That is going to give you that extra crispy, golden brown turkey skin,” said Chef Rose.
Chef Rose cooks his turkeys at only 320 to 350 degrees. He puts the thermometer in the leg and takes it out at 165 degrees - this is because it’s going to continue cooking once you take it out. This method helps keep the turkey moist.
