One in, one out: making room for holiday gifts

OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — The stockings are empty.

Gifts unwrapped.

Empty boxes pushed aside.

The holidays have come and gone; now we have to figure out what to do with all this stuff.

“Have a one in one out mindset,” Laura Neesen, Hammock & Hollyhock said.

Neesen, a professional organizer, said the best way to find a place for something new is to get rid of something old.

“Toys are abundant in most homes,” Neesen said. “I would say the best thing to do is try to involve the children in selecting toys as they'd like to donate as they've grown out of particular games, toys, even books. If things are falling out on to the floor, then it’s time to really think about what’s being used, what’s appreciated, and try to part with those things that just don't have a place.”

She said don't box up and store your unused items.

“Pass those items along to family members, neighbors, friends who have children in those sizes,” Neesen said.

If the time comes and you need those items again, hand me downs, she said usually come full circle so don't feel bad about not hanging on to something.

Many places in the Omaha metro are accepting donations including the WCA, Open Door Mission and St. Vincent De Paul Thrift Store.
