Omaha Public School leaders talked about the future of the district on Wednesday at Lothrop Elementary School in North Omaha.

Lothrop Elementary was one of the schools currently being remodeled from the OPS 2014 bond.

This is also the first time current Superintendent Mark Evans spoke to 3 News Now about his decision to stay on board for the next year after a failed national superintendent search to replace him.

"Without a transition time which I hope now we are going to have next year with a new leader, knowing if I didn't know that with a sense of obligation although I wouldn't deny it was a difficult decision, one that I wasn't planning to make nor the board but it just ended up being the circumstances that we had," said Evans.

Evans said his priorities is to make sure the current construction projects of the bond are completed, helping craft a new bond and making sure student success continues in an upward trend and learning from past mistakes.

"We're also working diligently with our bus company that we have a contract with because we don't want those hiccups that we had last year," said Evans.

OPS board president Lacey Merica said they board will probably start a new superintendent search this Fall.

"And now the board will be looking forward with how we are moving forward whether a national search what are our next steps so those are all things that the board will be working together to identify over the course of the next couple of months," said Merica.

Evan's contract is just over $295-thousand dollars, a 2.5-percent increase from last year's salary to stay on for one more year.
