Young children lose their parents in a summer crash in Sarpy County. Now, friends are holding a fundraiser for the kids this weekend while their grandparents are hoping to give them their "Forever Home."
For the first time this week, the grandparents of the Penick kids take all of them to see the house they hope to purchase.
Jennifer and Adam Penick were killed on June 25 when the vehicle they were driving crossed a median and hit a truck head on at Highway 50 near Schram Road.
Jennifer's parents moved from South Korea to Nebraska to care for the children and are using their retirement to purchase the home.
A fundraiser will be held on Saturday from 10-4pm at Central Park in La Vista with proceeds going towards the kids.
"But you can imagine going from a 2 person household to a 7 person household is not only a culture shock but a financial shock, so with the assistance and help that the community of omaha has poured on us is greatly appreciated," said Emmett Wayne, their grandfather.
Wayne says getting back to school is bringing a sense of normalcy for the kids.
Jennifer was on the board for "Car Seats for Littles," and her father says a car seat saved the life of 5-year-old Unity who was in the vehicle during the crash.
Again, the Penick Kids Fundraiser is from 10-4pm on August 25 at Central Park in La Vista. They'll have a live and silent auction, bounce house, bake sale, and car seat fitting station which is what Jennifer was passionate about.
