A protest at U.S. Senator Deb Fischer's office in NW Omaha gets underway late Friday afternoon. It comes after the senator announced she will support President Trump's nominee for U.S. Education Secretary, Betsy DeVos.
More than 100 people were outside the U.S Senator's office because they say they're outraged for all the schools across the state.
In a statement, Sen. Fisher said they may not see eye to eye on every issue but DeVos has the ability and commitment to lead the department.
Thousands have added their name to a change.org petition asking for Fischer's resignation.
Indivisible Omaha, who organized the rally, says Senator Fischer’s statement organically prompted them to speak out since they don’t feel she listened to their voices.
“I think it is totally an education issue. Indivisible we are not a partisan group we don’t support any political nominee we are just here to participate in the political process and become more involved,” said Layne Jensen, the organizer of the rally with Indivisible Omaha.
Former and current teachers at the rally said DeVos has no experience and no knowledge to lead the department.
“We know how children need to learn and be educated that you need to not vote for her. She is wrong she doesn’t care about kids, she cares about money. We need to be advocates for kids, all learners, all learners,” said retired teacher Jan Carmen.
Another rally, organized by the Nebraska Democratic Party, is scheduled for Saturday at 2pm at 120th & W. Dodge Rd.
