A 17-year-old Fremont student faces charges for making online threats against a student at the the school, police say.
The school had Fremont police get involved after the threat of a gun was brought to officials attention.
The boy’s mother said he has just started at the high school two weeks ago, and was bullied by other boys. His response to the bullying was making threats on social media.
“He took it too far, I agree with that but I think he didn’t know he had other choices,” said his mother. She asked us to hide her identity.
School resource officer Jim Butts said the school brought the threats to his attention and he felt they were dangerous enough to search the teen.
They did not find a weapon on him or in his locker at school, but he says there was one found at another location.
“The gun was found in my home, we put it into evidence,” said the mother.
She said her son is not a violent person and would have never carried out his threats, ”I am shocked he took it this far and didn’t tell me about it, and I don’t know what I going to happen to him.”
She said although her son took his threats to far, she hopes the other bullies will see punishment
“But I would also like to see the bullies be reprimanded as well.”
After the boy was taken into custody, Fremont High school notified parents about the situation with this message:
“Earlier today the Fremont High School administration investigated a threat posted on social media that involved several students at the high school. A rumor circulated that a gun was present at the school. The student involved in making the threat was searched, as was his locker, and no gun was found. The situation has been referred to law enforcement for further investigation. The student is currently in police custody.” -Chuck Story, Principal
The school was never put into lockdown.
“Because it all happened on and the threat was never made directly to the school or at the school, we didn’t feel the school at that point was in jeopardy,” said Butts.
The 17 year old is facing terroristic threat charges and disturbance of the peace. He has been order to have a psyche evaluation and is in Sarpy County detention center.
