Poor behavior at OPS school leads to community mtg

Posted

Months of disruptive behavior from students at Nathan Hale Magnet Middle School has created a call to action for the school district.

After much pleading from teachers for support from Omaha Public Schools, saying they need help with disruptive students, OPS has pledged to offer more support for staff.

OPS has added extra staff, brought in security guards and has even hired a consulting company that will host trainings for staff so they have the support and resources to address the inappropriate behavior.

In efforts to address concerns from staff and parents, OPS held a school-parent meeting hosted at the school Monday night. Parents voiced concerns – lack of communication on issues involving students, disruptive behavior in the classroom that’s jeopardizing their own child’s education, and the need for more diversity amongst staff.

Principal Darin Williams said they are doing the best to support teachers, so they feel confident and secure in addressing these issues for the well-being of the students – but says they need parent support as well. Williams says they will continue to reach out to parents through different forms of communication in hopes to get more parents involved.

Parents and school administrators are working to create a monthly meeting where open-dialogue between staff and parents can hopefully help diminish the students’ disruptive behavior.
