It's been a day of mourning at Norris Middle School in Omaha as young students, teachers and staff remember their friend Kevin Ramirez-Cabrera, 14.
The teen died in a crash Saturday morning near the CenturyLink Center.
Police say speed is likely a factor when a car crashed into a pole.
The 15-year-old driver and another passenger survived but Ramirez-Cabrera, who wasn't wearing a seatbelt, died after the wreck.
"He was very funny,” said Jennifer Moore, Norris Middle School language teacher. “He has this unforgettable smile, I'm even thinking about it now. Even when he was in trouble he smiled all the time."
Teachers say 8th grader Ramirez-Cabrera was a friend to many at his middle school.
They say it's been tough to deal with the loss.
"A lot of shock and disbelief,” said Science Teacher Jenny Maddock.
"This morning it was really quiet,” Maddock said. “They day was kind of somber but as the day went on kids started talking and realizing that it helps to talk about it.”
Ramirez-Cabrera was passionate about soccer and boxing.
The school has already thought of several ways to remember him.
"Kids have been making posters in my room,” Moore said. “They've talked about maybe reaching out to his sister and his mom and seeing if maybe we could do a T-shirt and maybe help raise some money. They really want to help out the family, maybe dedicating a soccer season in his memory."
There’s a GoFundMe page to help pay for funeral expenses.
