In 2010, UNO student Scott Limbeck died after a hit-and-run crash. The 24-year-old was a few courses away from graduation.

His family and friends have kept his legacy alive by putting on a “ScottyThon” fundraiser every year.

This year’s ScottyThon will be held at Falconwood Park on Nov. 4; the money raised at the concert will go toward a scholarship fund in memory of Limbeck.

“A handshake and a smile was never going to do it for him,” Eric Limbeck said as he described his younger brother.

“When you lose someone as peaceful as Scott to a random violent crime, you really lose a lot of faith in your community and humanity,” he said.

Limbeck said his faith was restored when the annual ScottyThon started.

Friend Shaun Shepoka said the fundraiser's goal is to help raise money for the UNO Scott Limbeck Scholarship, a $500 scholarship for students.

“It goes to show you that one person can make a difference,” Shepoka said.

“His motto was, 'It is nice to be nice,' ” said Limbeck, adding that paying it forward was what Scotty was all about.

“In order to get the scholarship, they have to come and then they sign up with their name and email and the family does a selection process,” Shepoka said.

A GoFundMe page has been set up and more information on the event can be found here.
