OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — In honor of Flag Day you will see a bunch of American flags flying high. You might also see an “Honor & Remember” flag which is flown to honor fallen military service members.
“Our chapter is very active, we have presented nearly 190 flags since our inception in 2010,” says Jim Meier, Director of the Honor and Remember Nebraska Chapter.
The chapter is part of a nationwide program that provides special flags to families who had a military member killed in action or died from illness. “It’s bittersweet, it’s a strong reminder of the death of a loved one in your family,” says Meier.
The flags are made specially for that fallen service member. It includes their rank, their name, the date they died, and where they died on it. There is also a flag for fallen first responders, and those include the same information.
“The biggest fear, what I’ve learned from these families is that their loved ones sacrifice, all of that would be forgotten,” says Meier.
Meier says he stays busy providing these flags to families, but he would like to get the word out about the flags even more so. If you know of a fallen service member or first responder and would like to learn more about the flags, you can call Jim directly at 402-490-9293 or you can email him at meier260@cox.net
