With the snow on the way,  city crews are pulling double duty this week.

Crews with Omaha Public Works have been patching potholes over the last few weeks. Overnight Tuesday, it will be time to get the plows out.

"A lot of overtime our guys we go into our winter shift for Thanksgiving until the time change in the spring and so there's a lot of time spent on overtime," said Austin Rowser of Omaha Public Works.

The freeze and thaw cycle of this winter has created quite a pothole problem.

"A lot of the roads side roads even the main roads have potholes in them," said driver Michael Davis.

Omaha Public Works says its taking advantage of warmer days to patch the potholes. But, with snow on the way, street crews were also out Tuesday pre-treating the roads.

"We'll have our full fleet out which is about 110 trucks. I've got some support help coming from other city departments and divisions and that's about another 20 trucks that we'll have out there moving for me," Rowser said. "And we do expect to have contract operations with this storm which will be about another 200 trucks as well."

Council Bluffs Public Works says it, too, had workers both patching and pre-treating Tuesday. In both Omaha and Council Bluffs, it's the same members of the crews that do both jobs.

Rowser says whatever weather winter brings, the street crews are ready to go.

"Our guys work really hard," Rowser said. "It's a lot of time away from family and friends . A lot of them don't see weekends, so we appreciate them very much."
