As families gear up for Thanksgiving some are only thinking about how they're going to put food on the table.

On Wednesday, groups will come together to fight against hunger and also collect personal items for families.

Students from the mentoring program Partnership 4 Kids, along with University of Nebraska at Omaha Susan Thompson Buffet Scholarship recipients, are leading an annual service project to fight against hunger during the holidays, according to Lori Lundholm, development and communications coordinator for the mentoring program.

The effort, known as the Hunger Collaborative, started three years ago to help stock shelves during the holiday season at Together, Inc., Heartland Hope Mission and Heart Ministry.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., students will be stationed throughout Omaha collecting canned goods, clothing and hygiene supplies.

Students also created a Go Fund Me page to raise a $1,000 to purchase an aquaponics system for Together, Inc.

The system will allow the agency to grow fresh produce in- house for distribution to those in need all year long, officials say.
