You won’t find the word Spellebrity in the dictionary, but it’s a familiar term for organizers of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

It’s what young spellers become when they show off their skills every year in Washington, D.C.

New this year is the Spellebrity Video Contest which can lead to an expenses-paid trip to see the spelling bee.

“Their ears just perked up, ‘What? I don’t have to spell for the spelling bee?’ What this is, is the Spellebrity Video Contest with the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which this year is presented by Kindle. What we’re asking kids eighth grade or younger to do is to submit a video and we want those to really inspire people to want to read. Before our kids were great spellers, they were great readers,” said Valerie Miller, with E.W. Scripps Company.

The contest aims to showcase the importance of reading.

“This is the 89th year for the Scripps National Spelling Bee and the fact that it’s presented this year by Kindle really kind of gets to that message of the importance of reading and early literacy and that’s why this Spellebrity Video Contest is so important,” said Miller.

Who can enter?

U.S. students in eighth grade or younger, teams of four or less.

What do you win?

The top five videos win a trip (Six nights at the Gaylord National Resort) for each team member and a parent to Washington, D.C. to see the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

During Bee Week, spellers will vote for their favorite video, which will win $1,000 for each student.

What about the video?

It can’t be longer than five minutes and must show how to “kindle the love of reading” by including three words you think are important for a spelling bee and use those words to inspire others to read.

When is the deadline?

April 4
