Teen dies in crash after fleeing from police

Posted

A Carter Lake teen is dead after leading police on a chase in Council Bluffs late Tuesday evening.

“An officer with the Iowa Department of Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division was attempting to stop two motorcyclists.  I don't know the reason they were attempting to stop them, however, the motorcycles did take off at a high rate of speed,” said Sergeant Budd with the Council Bluffs Police Department.

Police say the officer attempted to pull the two motorcyclists over by the Pottawattamie County Jail, but they fled westbound onto Nash Blvd.  Police say that's when one of the riders crashed a stolen bike.

“The motorcycle operator lost control of the motorcycle behind me, went over the curb, struck a fence and was ejected from the motorcycle,” said Sgt. Budd.

18-year-old Lance McCormick of Carter Lake died at the hospital.  Police say the other driver with McCormick left the scene.

“I just knew, when I saw the broken plastic pieces and the fence, I just knew,” said Caleb Coley.

Caleb Coley says he's having a hard time believing the circumstances that led up to his good friend's death.

“I don't know why that would have been anything they were doing.  I mean a stolen bike? I’m not sure why he would do that? And I heard they’re looking for another person,” said Coley.

Coley says McCormick loved bikes and enjoyed building his own.  He has no idea why he would have stolen one.  Coley says many are confused why McCormick did what he did last night that's not the person they want him to be remembered as.

“He was really out there, like really outgoing, loud and funny,” said Coley.

Council Bluffs Police are still looking for the second motorcyclist with McCormick on Tuesday night.  If you have any information please call police.
