The family of the man who was trapped when the trench he was working in collapsed last Tuesday is thanking first responders.
Randy and Joan Johnson of Ft. Calhoun wrote the following letter which appeared in the Omaha World-Herald's Public Pulse.
Last Tuesday, our family was reminded of how fast a typical day can change into a nightmare in a matters of seconds.
Our son Drew Johnson became partially trapped in an excavation cave-in.
When we first got word, it seemed minor, only buried to the knees, and we thought he would be free before we could arrive on the scene. Upon arriving at the scene, we soon learned it was much more life-threatening than originally thought.
Our family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Omaha Fire Department, the Omaha Police Department and the Metropolitan Utilities District personnel for their tireless work, the private excavators who came to assist, the neighbors who offered their homes, food and water throughout this emotional and dramatic time, and the media for respecting our privacy.
The bottom line is that these efforts saved our son's life, and for that we are very grateful. Thanks again.
Randy and Joan Johnson, Fort Calhoun
