Voter ID resolution hearing

It's an old topic that remains a hot-button issue in the state, voter ID.

Senator John Murante introduced a resolution that would leave it up to voters to decide whether they believe Nebraskans should be required to show ID at the polls.

This resolution would amend the state constitution.

Sen. Murante believes showing voter IDs would fight against voter fraud.

If it's approved, the amendment would go on the November 2018 ballot.

Under the state constitution it reads quote:

“All elections shall be free; and there shall be no hindrance or impediment to the right of a qualified voter to exercise the elective franchise.”

That's the section Murante wants to change.

According to the legislative resolution, it's meant to ensure the integrity of elections and provide public confidence.

People would have to show a photo or digital image before voting.

But the resolution is facing fierce opposition from the League of Women Voters.

The group plans to testify against it.

State senators will hold a hearing for the resolution 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Lincoln.
