OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — They're calling it the "Gateway to the West in Omaha” and it brings an urban feel to a suburban area.

Developers broke ground on Avenue One on Thursday. The mixed-use development is located at 192nd & West Dodge Road.

The $1.2 billion project will turn 50 city blocks into a ton of office and retail space as well as a hotel and residential living. It will also create 6,500 permanent jobs when it's completely built.

"But to have this development with the business park, with the residential, with the business with the retail that they're going to have, the restaurants, it's just going to open up this area and make it more and more inviting,” said Mayor Jean Stothert.

Developers envision putting a pedestrian bridge over W. Dodge Rd. to connect to Youngman Lake.

The widening of 192nd Street to 6 lanes is expected to be completed in 2024.
