OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — You may have walked out to your car recently and thought to yourself, “I need a carwash!"

The winter build-up of salt and brine has left many cars looking a different shade of color, but experts say it can also cause some serious damage.

De-icers on roads ahead of a big storm often find themselves on the exterior or undercarriage of your car. Automotive expert Michael Mulroney said this can cause electrical systems to shut down, it can accelerate the build up of rust and a variety of other issues.

"Sometimes those things pack up inside your wheels and throws off your wheel balance,” he said. “You will then experience a shimmy while you're driving, making your driving experience uncomfortable. Of course, salt being what it is, the animal that it is, it helps destroy clear coats, paint finishes and that kind of thing. Water, air and salt as a mixture totally is a complete hazard for any kind of metal.”

There are sealants that can help protect your car, but they are not permanent. Another tip is to utilize a car wash with an undercarriage feature.
