Omaha Children's Hospital is better equipped to care for some of the area's most vulnerable patients with its newly expanded pediatric intensive care unit.
Hospital staff says so far this year, around 50 patients have families have been turned away, having to seek care as far away as Denver or Minnesota.
The hospital revamped its short-stay unit to add nine more rooms to the PICU, for a total of 28.
Children's is currently undergoing a $450 million expansion. The PICU is expected to be moved to a newly-constructed tower in about three years.
