OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) - The family behind the farm that rents chickens is adding goats to the herd.
The Barreras farm, located near Northwest Omaha, is adding raw goat milk to the farm eggs and chicken they sell. They also rent out baby chicks as an educational program each Easter.
It started with a fly-by-night idea about teaching about birds. Mariel Barreras and her husband noticed too many Craigslist and Humane Society postings for chickens after they grew out of that cute baby stage.
"We're trying to alleviate the abandonment of the chickens," she said.
They bought a farm, and began renting out a pair of baby chicks for one week for $25.00. The birds come with a box to live, feed for the week, and instructions. At the end of the week, the chicks get returned to the farm. For more information on the Barreras family farm, visit facebook.com/barrerasfamilyfarm.
