A group of drone hobbyists have started a group of racing pilots.

For people like Skyler Elder the new hobby is taking off.

"It's just a ball of fun, to get off of work and go kill an hour at the park," he says.

Thursday, the park was Lake Manawa. It turns into a high tech, high flying drone race track. Flags and posts are set up, along side poles with a timing system. Each quad has an infrared transmitter on it and sensors on the poles receive it."

The group is called Prowler FPV. The FPV stands for first person view.It comes from the perspective of video flying remote control quad copters with a small camera on it. The camera transmits back to special goggles the pilot wears. Groups take off in heats chasing a clock. They also flip over trees and zip around posts clocking speeds up to 80 miles per hour.

Sometimes there's a crash or two.

"One thing we say in this hobby is the hobby isn't flying. It's fixing and waiting for parts,"
Travis Wisotzkey said,

Wisotzkey is the organizer of Prowler FPV. He he started the group about a year ago, with a few guys who just liked to fly. That hobby, no pun intended, took flight and thanks to Facebook the group massively grew.

It's creating a community, that Elder hopes paints a different picture when people think of drones.

"The more that people see them an notice they're not scary spy drones and everything that it's just a good time," he said.
