Omaha kids to put on plays of Disney classics

Posted

The magic of Disney has come to Omaha. A handful of area schools are putting on stage productions of Disney musicals. From the Jungle Book, Aladdin to The Lion King, schools have gotten help from Disney to bring the productions to the community.

Disney awarded Omaha Performing Arts an 100,000 dollar grant for schools to perform shortened productions like Lion King Kids and Jungle book kids.

Monday afternoon, students at Kennedy Elementary school were rehearing their parts for Lion King Kids! They'll perform the show in February.

Kennedy is one of five Omaha elementary schools working on a professional musical thanks to the Disney Theatrical Group. Iris Simmons is in the production...

"I've never experienced this before. This is all new to me."

The Disney grant helps pay teaching artists, local professionals who help schools work on their shows. Students will also build the sets and costumes for the show.

"My mom was like, you're famous! You're going to be a star!" Simmons said.
