A bus veered into a group of street musicians in Haiti on Sunday, causing chaos in the streets of Gonaives and resulting in 34 fatalities and dozens of injuries, the BBC reports.
The driver tried to flee the scene after the incident. After the driver tried to flee, bystanders became aggregated and reportedly tried to light the bus on fire.
"The people who were not victims of the accident tried to burn the bus with the passengers inside," said Faustin Joseph, a civic protection coordinator, told the BBC.
"The bus, the passengers and the driver were all placed into the care of the local authorities", he added.
Officials do not know what caused the driver to veer into the crowd.
Gonaives has a population of 300,000 and is located on Haiti's west coast.
