OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — The Green Spot near 72nd and Pacific is open.
"The Green Spot, we sell natural dog and cat foods and supplies," said Jessica Ellis, co-owner of the store. "We normally do some self-service dog washing as well as a la carte services like nail trims and dog washes for dogs."
Sisters Whitney Kamish and Jessica Ellis opened the store in 2012. They firmly believe in providing fresh food for pets.
"Healthy equals happy," Kamish said. "Just like us, the more real, fresh food that we eat, the better we feel, and that holds true for pets as well."
"We carry a wide selection of pet food," said Ellis. "We have the dry cooked kibble. We have a lot of brands of those. The companies that we focus on are going to be the smaller, family-owned companies, and you're not going to find them at the grocery store, so they're going to be a better quality. Your dog is going to eat less of those foods. We also have a big selection of canned food and our frozen raw."
When COVID-19 first hit, they saw an uptick in business.
"We are a grocery store for pets, so we did see an initial stock up in March when everything started happening," Kamish said. "Customers who typically buy one bag of food bought two, so nothing crazy. But there was some stocking up in the month of March so April was drastically lower due to the lower amount of foot traffic in store."
The store made some adjustments. They have are deeply sanitizing, offering hand sanitizer for customers and offering curbside service and delivery.
"It's free delivery within 10 miles of our store on orders over $25," Kamish said. "If it's less than $25, it's a small $5 delivery fee. Otherwise, if you do live outside of that 10 mile bubble from the green spot, it is a $2 per mile fee."
The store is also renovating its store, so because of that plus social distancing guidelines, they're currently not offering nail trimming or self-serve washes for pets.
"With social distancing, it makes it very difficult to social distance when there's dogs in the store,"Ellis said. "So that was one of the things we decided to keep everybody safe, that we ask to keep customers' pets at home and have humans do the shopping for now."
