OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — The Omaha Police Department is asking anyone with information about a newborn that was left on a porch to contact them.

The department says “a Hispanic female, approximately 20 years old, was seen putting a package on the front porch of a residence in the area of 5600 S. 15th Street.” The incident occurred around 11:40 a.m. on Monday.

Residents at the scene opened the package to find a newborn baby and called police.

"My wife and I, we started crying," said Vicinte Cruz, who lives at the home where the baby was left. "Somebody was walking by and dropped a suspicious package right in front of my house and left it on the chair."

Cruz said he and his wife weren't sure what was in the bag, so they called Omaha Police.

He said officers quickly knew it was a baby.

"I mean... really... think about it. What happened, why would that person do that... it's a baby," said Cruz.

Cruz said he has no idea why the mother chose to leave the baby at his home or who she is.

"My wife said she was really jumpy--probably don't know what to do. She said she was walking really slow because, I believe, she just had the baby maybe a couple hours before... before dropping the baby here, but I hope that she's okay,” said Cruz.

He said he was relieved when paramedics told him the baby boy, who was wrapped inside a blanket and left in a bag, would be okay.

Police say the woman who placed the package "was seen getting into the passenger seat of what is believed to be a black 2 door Pontiac, possibly [a] G5 model, with dark tinted windows."

Police say they are concerned about the health and well-being of the mother and ask anyone with information which may lead to her to call the Omaha Police Department's Child Victims Unit at 402-444-5636 or Crime Stoppers at 402-444-STOP (7867).
