August in the Midwest is usually a hot month. For us in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, we’ve enjoyed a mild start to the month this year! Don’t worry, the summer heat isn’t gone forever.

The first two days of August reached the low to mid 80s, but were still just slightly below average. Now, we’re enjoying a couple of days in the 70s!! The first part of this week will stay below average, but more heat returns by the weekend. If you love highs in the 90s, we’ve got a couple more, so don’t fret.

On average, August is usually still a hot month for us. The average high in Omaha during August is 85 degrees with an average low of 64 degrees. We typically pick up 3.82 inches of rain out at Eppley during the month, too. We could certainly use the rain, since we’re so far behind for the year!

For August this year, the Climate Prediction Center shows some overall cooler than average temperatures in the central part of the United States.

While it looks like we might enjoy some slightly cooler temps, the CPC also shows the chance for some wetter than average conditions which would be very welcome! We are in need of the rain, especially in Omaha and in northeastern Nebraska and northwestern Iowa. Preferably as a nice, steady rain so it can really soak in, but that’s a lot to ask of Mother Nature!
