There is a demand for solar eclipse glasses before the big event on Monday. Stores have been getting shipments in and selling out within hours.

The Hy-Vee on Madison in Council Bluffs had 1,500 glasses in around 2pm on Thursday, and sold out by 4:30pm.

“I came out about 11:30,” said Shirley Blaney.

She was able to grab some for her and the family who have plans to make Monday a family event, “Star crunches, cosmic brownies, and watch.”

Others drove from Elkhorn to buy some glasses.

“This won't happen again in our lifetime,” said Jayne Dean.

Mangelsen’s also got a new batch of glasses in Thursday afternoon and had a line wrapped around the store.

“I raced down after I heard the glasses went on sale,” said Laura McManus, who was grabbing some for family.

“I have been studying up and making my plans for months,” she said.

Todd Hayes grabbed the last few in the store and was surprised at how many people didn’t have glasses yet.

“You can tell by the crowds coming in and out the last minute push is on,” said Hayes.

Hy-Vee and Mangelsen’s hope they get a new shipment in on Friday.
