OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — Nebraska Medicine continues to prepare for a possible surge in patients, even as health officials say social distancing is helping to flatten the curve.

Nebraska Medicine Executive Director of Emergency Management and Bio-Preparedness Shelly Schwedhelm says the number of COVID-19 patients will be directly tied back to how well the community and the state does in mitigation efforts over the next few weeks.

She adds the hospital is continually fine tuning their plans on treating and responding to coronavirus patients and says Nebraska Medicine has open beds and free ventilators at this time.

Schwedhelm says it’s the mission of healthcare workers to prevent illnesses, despite those that believe the virus is not that serious.
