A male giraffe died at the Henry Doorly Zoo Tuesday at the age of 17.
According to a release, Sam had a history of joint problems that worsened over several years. He lived in the African Grasslands exhibit, which was temporarily closed Tuesday.
Sam was the male parent in several births at the zoo, which now has only one male and nine females.
