The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says it is investigating a phone scam where the caller impersonates a deputy to try and steal your money.
Deputies say the caller claims to be Deputy Sharpe with the warrants and citations division of the Sheriff’s Office, but that department doesn’t exist.
The fake deputy also says you can avoid being arrested for a warrant for failure to appear for jury duty by calling him back at (402) 209-2932 and making a payment with a pre-paid debit card, according to investigators.
There two things wrong this scenario, the Sheriff’s Office says:
1) The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will never call to solicit any fund from you regarding a warrant.
2) The Sheriff’s Office will never call citizens regarding missing jury duty.
Investigators say they expect some details, like the name of the person or the issues they’re calling about, to change as the scammers try to steal from their victims.
They say if you have questions about the legitimacy of a call, you can contact the Sheriff’s Office at (402) 599-2633.
