With Omaha hosting the Big Ten Baseball Tournament at T.D. Ameritrade Park and Nebraska playing Wednesday afternoon, fans came in waves to watch the Huskers play on home field.
“It speaks well to Nebraska people for sports, they really back the University of Nebraska,” said Tim Cullinane.
In past years tailgaters and ballpark attendees would only be able to enjoy alcohol outside the stadium, but this year the park will be selling beer and wine during the Big Ten Tournament to get everyone for the College World Series.
“I think it’s good because if you are out here drinking anyway you are going to come out and drink again and go back inside, so why not make some money on it,” said Craig Allrich.
“A lot of the other universities do it, we are kind of way behind on that as long as people don’t get crazy,” added Cullinane.
Park organizers said to keep everyone under control and safe they have a wristband system. You grab a wristband to drink and if you are under 30 you will be carded again when you buy your alcohol.
Those filling into the stadium were excited to hear beer would be available inside.
“I think it will draw an even bigger crowd,” said Jill Mcdermott.
Restaurants across the street said they aren’t too worried about alcohol being available inside the stadium.
“It’s such a festive kind of party week and party weekend, I don’t think people are going to stop drinking just because they had a beer or two in the stadium,” said Blatt Manager Devin Jacobson.
The tournament continues Thursday and Nebraska plays at 9am.
